Polk Audio PSW404 10-Inch 200-Watt Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black)

Polk Audio PSW404 10-Inch 200-Watt Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) Review

Not just a boomer. I generally can't appreciate most rap or any music that has a straight one or two note boom-boom low end. My cup of tea is music with lows that vary in frequency i.e. different types of drums, upright bass violins, tubas, pipe organs, etc. This sub holds clean and true to those and other instruments. Plus it can home theater great crashes and roars but you'll need to turn it up a bit for impact when watching movies. It does have the ability to rattle and roll artwork on the walls when required, but for that I'd prefer a more expensive sub from HSU or SVS. Anyways this sub is heavy, well constructed, has a fairly powerful amp and is just as ugly and/or just as nice looking as all the other black boxes...It should last me for many years.

Only one minus: it has a foam surround. So the issue is foam surround vs rubber. Foam supposedly deteriorates. I have a pair of Kenwoods with foam surrounding the large 15" base cones but the foam surrounds still rock and roll after 30 years...so I don't know...foam is OK with me. Maybe I'll win a lotto before the foam deteriorates on this sub and replace it with a higher end unit. Unfortunately, this unit is just recently out-of-production so if you can find one and can't afford a HSU or SVS, pick it up...it is a good box, no doubt one that you should be able to enjoy for many years...

Polk Audio PSW404 10-Inch 200-Watt Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) Overview

10" Bass driver / Integrated 200 Watt Amplifier / Automatic On and Off / Adjustable Crossover / Magnetically Shielded

Polk Audio PSW404 10-Inch 200-Watt Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) Specifications

Designed for mid-sized rooms, the Polk PSW404 200-watt powered subwoofer makes a great addition to your home theater or stereo system. The sub features a 10-inch long-throw driver that produces a longer excursion and better linearity than most comparably sized models, along with slot-load venting that improves the bass response by dramatically minimizing turbulence, noise, and distortion. The resulting thunderous bass shakes out all the thrills and chills of your favorite movie soundtracks, while its accurate musicality makes you sit up and take notice whether you're listening to rump-shaking hip-hop or a powerful classical piece.

Contributing to the distortion-free bass response is the rock-solid medium-density fiberboard (MDF) housing, which includes a 1-inch-thick front baffle that minimizes panel resonance. Additional features include a hi-roll surround that supports longer excursion; a high-current 200-watt continuous (375 watts dynamic) power amplifier; adjustable low-pass crossover, phase switch, and volume controls; and an auto on/off circuit that automatically turns on the subwoofer when it senses a program signal. If no signal is detected, the amplifier turns off within 15 minutes.

The PSW404, which sports a genuine wood veneer finish in black, includes an unfiltered LFE input for use with low-pass filtered output jacks along with filtered speaker-level and line-level inputs. As a final bonus, the sub is magnetically shielded for safe, flexible placement near a TV or video monitor. The sub measures 13.62 by 14.31 by 16.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a five-year warranty on the speaker and a three-year warranty on the amplifier.

Polk Audio 10" Sub Review - Dave Hightower - Zeeland, MI.
I really like this Sub, it has a lot of power and has great sound when compairing price and performance. I bought two of them and wanted to buy two more but have not been able to find the same deal I did last time. I will continue to watch this product for another great bargan and perfromance. Overall i have two independant home theater systems in my house and both are equipped with Polk Audio speakers. I continue to be impressed with their performance.

SWEET Sound - crazydays01 - chicago
I use to have the polk psw12 wanted some thing more compact and this blows it out of the water tighter bass and gives a real theater effect.

Good deal for the price - R. Denney - Chicago, IL
This sub is easy too hook-up, good looking, and delivers a good range of sound from the low-lows to higher notes. Hard to beat for the price. And if you get it delivered by JR, you'll get it very quickly (before the estimated date in my case) and in great condition.

The only downside is that it is a bit-larger and slightly heaver than I personally expected, but only slightly.
